For this episode of Have Your (Cup)cake and Read It Too, Zoe Triska from Huffington Post Books and I read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Flynn’s razor-sharp writing style immersed me instantly into the mystery of the disappearance of Amy Dunne. I was instantly enthralled by the ingeniously plotted thriller, that I was able to read the book in just a few hours.
I created a red velvet cupcake to represent Nick & Amy’s 5th wedding anniversary—the opening scene of the book. Red velvet is a popular wedding cake choice, so I found it appropriate to incorporate it into the Anniversary cupcakes. In between the frosting and the cupcake, there is a hidden layer of raspberry jam, as things aren’t always what they are in the inside as what they look like on the outside … much like Nick and Amy’s marriage. The cupcakes were topped with maple syrup frosting because one seen of the book takes us to a time when Nick was making pancakes for Amy—a small detail, but memorable detail.
