<itunes:summary>Barry Eisler, who has published his thrillers for nearly a decade with two of the biggest houses in town, just turned down half-a-million dollars for a 2-book deal to self-publish. In a 1-on-1 conversation with Mike Shatzkin, Eisler explains the financial logic behind his decision and answers a series of other questions.
Is he giving up print or doing it another way? What’s his plan for selling translation rights? Without a publisher, how will he let his fans know about his new books when they arrive? And, most important, does he see himself as an outlier or as the avant garde of what will be a trend of established authors walking away from big advances in favor of doing it on their own?

With Google Books, millions of users search through trillions of words in milliseconds to find just the book they were looking for and the retailers that sell it. What started out with one makeshift scanner and a dream has become a large-scale operation that delivers a free promotional tool for more than 35,000 publishers around the world. Listen in to find out what’s next for the Google Books Partner Program, Google Books search and Google eBooks.

<itunes:summary>Michael Norris presents new findings from Simba Information’s renowned Trade E-Book Publishing2011 report to explore the complicated relationship between physical bookstores and digital products that long predates Google eBooks.
With unbiased, completely independent analysis of the e-book market and the modern consumer, this research will undo common misunderstandings and answer critical questions: What role is Google eBooks going to play in the life of independent bookstores? What can be learned from the earlier blunders of chain bookstores and e-reader manufacturers? And finally: Does the future of books depend on getting this odd couple relationship right?

<itunes:summary>ARROW (Accessible Registries of Rights Information and Orphan Works) is a system – developed by a European consortium coordinated by AIE – to help libraries with the identification of rights status and rights holders in digital library programs. The system is based on a pro-active search of rights holders for works eligible for inclusion in any digitization program, and indirectly is a tool for the identification of orphan works, in circumstances in which other relevant information may not be available.
Listen in as speakers Piero Attanasio, AIE, mEDRA, and Michael Healy, The Book Rights Registry, discuss the Arrow approach and compare the US experience in the same field. This discussion was moderated by Chris Kenneally, Copyright Clearance Center and BeyondTheBook.com.

<itunes:summary>The role of traditional print books as the chief means of accessing content is changing, along with the traditional publishing model. With much of the book industry hard at work developing and implementing digital strategies, knowing what is moving consumers to transition to go digital is essential to a sound strategy. What factors shape their attitudes toward digital content and purchasing decisions?
During this podcast episode, Kelly Gallagher, Bowker’s PubTrack™ Consumer, and Angela Bole, BISG, share new data from the Book Industry Study Group’s on-going research projects: Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading and Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education. Along the way, they examine, for the first time in a single presentation, both student and general consumer e-book buying behaviors and preferences. The session also provides insight into where the e-book market is heading.

<itunes:summary>Consumers are seeing and tapping into more and more mobile 2D barcodes, in magazines, on billboards, and on product packaging. What should publishers be doing with these codes? When is a generic QR code best used and when should more sophisticated 2D barcodes be employed? What can be tracked when a consumer scans one of these codes? When do you have a 2D code link to a website and when do you send a text message or video?
In this high energy session, Chuck Martin, author of The Third Screen: Marketing to Your Customers in a World Gone Mobile, addresses these and other relevant mobile-related issues and provides practical strategies and tactics for publishers on how to best use these codes. He provides insight, including how industry innovators are using mobile and 2D barcodes, along with tips and guidance for the publishing world of 2D, both for today and tomorrow.

<itunes:summary>As the market for tablet devices and dedicated e-readers rapidly evolves, publishers are facing new opportunities and demand for enhanced e-books. But what is the most efficient way for independent publishers to navigate the many logistical hurdles involved – from securing and managing rights, to engaging with technical and creative specialists, and finding the right digital distribution partners? When does it make sense to engage outside contractors, and when to build the books in-house?
This panel of experts, moderated by journalist, professor and digital strategy consultant Charlotte Abbott, share some models that are currently in play, and guiding principles for indie houses positioning themselves for the future.

<itunes:summary>The landscape is rapidly changing. 2009 was Apple’s year. 2010 was Google’s year. What’s next?
Today, it’s not enough to develop an app for Apple. It would be like only selling your title on Amazon. Publishers can achieve a diverse hedge in mobile by thinking in terms of series, brands and platforms. Until recently, mobile was largely used as a marketing tool for print publishers. Now, apps are generating real revenue for those publishers that are nimble and understand the market and some of its rules and guidelines.
Mobile technology allows publishers to go beyond an enhanced reading experience and adapt their content to create a true user experience. By thinking in terms of multimedia content, publishers can leverage their assets to take advantage of the capabilities of today’s devices and the strengths of mobile: personalization, customization, social networking tools, and features.
This podcast episode features Chris McKenney and Sanj Kharbanda.
